Introduction

MicroCal, LLC is committed to protecting your privacy.  We want both our customers and visitors to microcal.com to be aware of any information we collect, how we use it, and under what circumstances we disclose it.  You can visit most pages on the www.microcal.com website without giving us any protected personal information about yourself. But sometimes we do need to request that you provide us with protected personal information to enable us to supply you with the information, products, and services that you request.  By registering your details and/or using this website, you confirm that you accept the terms of this policy and consent to the use of your data as is detailed in this policy.

Collection of Your Personal Information

We will ask you when we need information that personally identifies you (personal information) or allows us to contact you. Some personal information is requested when you are registering as a registered user of www.microcal.com.  You may either choose to register as a user or you may be required to register as a user (for example, as is the case when you choose to download pdf files for application notes, the full reference list for microcalorimetry or pdf files of our service and user’s manuals). We may request additional personal information depending upon those features and functions of www.microcal.com that you use.  Personal information collected by MicroCal is limited to information needed to provide information or a service you requested.

Use of Your Personal Information

When you log in to www.microcal.com, we use your e-mail address and password to validate that you are a registered user and:

  • To ensure our site is relevant to your needs
  • To deliver services, such as application notes, newsletters, events, training or manuals that you request
  • To help us create and publish content most relevant to you
  • To alert you to product upgrades, special offers, updated information and other new services from MicroCal
  • To allow you access to those areas of www.microcal.com that are designated as limited-entry areas, as appropriate
  • To contact you by e-mail with details of our products, schedule of events, or technical service issues, if you so request

In addition, MicroCal may disclose your personal information, if required to do so by law or in the good-faith belief that such action is necessary to: (a) conform to the edicts of the law or comply with legal process served on MicroCal or the website; (b) protect and defend the rights or property of MicroCal; or (c) act in urgent circumstances to protect the personal safety of MicroCal employees, users of MicroCal products or services, or members of the public. Your personal information may be stored and processed in the United States or any other country in which MicroCal or its affiliates, subsidiaries or agents maintain facilities, and by using this website you consent to any such transfer of information outside of your country.

Control of your Personal Information Preferences

When you register on the website MicroCal will not share that information with third parties without your permission, other than for the limited exceptions already listed. It will only be used for the purposes stated above.  Registering also allows you to tell us how or whether you want MicroCal to communicate with you. MicroCal may send out periodic e-mails informing you of new products, updated schedules of events or technical service issues related to a product. In each e-mail, we will give you the opportunity to "opt out" of receiving future direct e-mails containing marketing or market research information. This means if we send you e-mails you will have the opportunity to confirm that you no longer wish to receive e-mails.  For matters not involving e-marketing, by using the website you give us your consent to collect and use your information in accordance with this privacy statement, unless you take affirmative action to indicate that you do not consent, for instance by clicking or checking the appropriate option or box at the point of collection of the information.

Use of Cookies

When you visit microcal.com, a cookie is placed on your computer (if your computer’s settings permit accepting cookies) or is read if you have visited the site previously and registered at that time.  A cookie is a piece of data stored on the user’s hard drive containing information about the user.  Usage of a cookie is not linked to any personal information on our site and once you close the user browser, it simply terminates.  One use of cookies is to assist in the collection of the site visitation statistics described above.  This is a tool we use to compile aggregated statistics about microcal.com web site usage.  The web browsers of most computers are initially set up to accept cookies.  If you prefer, you can set your browser to disable cookies or to inform you when a website is attempting to add a cookie.  You can also delete cookies that have been added previously to your computer’s cookie file.  If you choose to not have your browser accept cookies from the microcal.com web site, you will be able to manually sign in with your user name and password. If you choose not to register, you may not be able to access some information and service offerings on the site.

Security of your Personal Information

MicroCal takes your security seriously and takes reasonable steps to protect your information. No data transmission over the Internet or information storage technology can be guaranteed to be 100% secure. MicroCal continues to evaluate and implement enhancements in security technology and practices; however we can only take steps to help reduce the risks of unauthorized access. MicroCal maintains reasonable physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards to protect personal information about you.  MicroCal limits access to personal information about you to those employees who we reasonably believe need to come into contact with that information to provide products or services to you or in order to do their jobs.

Processing payments (For Symposia Registration Only)

If you use the MicroCal website for online registration for scientific symposia, to process your online payment of any registration fee, we may provide your personal information to appropriate financial institutions for completion of the registration fee payment transaction.  You will be notified electronically by MicroCal when the payment transaction has been completed.  For financial institutions and processors, the use of personally identifiable consumer information is governed by federal and state privacy laws.  

Changes to this Policy

MicroCal will occasionally update this privacy statement. When we do, we will also revise the "last updated" date at the top of the privacy statement. For changes to this statement that alter the protections that the current version of the Privacy Statement gives you, MicroCal will notify you by placing prominent notice on the website.

Additional Information

MicroCal also collects certain information about your computer hardware and software. This information may include: your IP address, browser type, operating system, domain name, access times and referring Web site addresses. This information is used for the operation of the service, to maintain quality of the service, and to provide general statistics regarding use of microcal.com.  MicroCal also collects information about which pages our customers visit within microcal.com. Site visitation data is identified only by a unique ID number, and it is never linked with personal information unless a user consents as described in this privacy statement. 

Enforcement

MicroCal is committed to making individual or systemic changes, as may be required, to correct complaints from anyone who has registered at our website about the manner in which we use his or her information. Your Rights
